What is NFC?
NFC stands for Near Field Communication. It is a wireless communication standard that lets two devices exchange data when held within approximately 4 centimetres of each other. You have almost certainly used it today. Every time you tap your Emirates NBD or ADCB card at a checkout terminal, or board the Dubai Metro with your Nol card, you are using NFC.

The defining quality of NFC is simplicity: hold two NFC devices near each other and data transfers instantly: no pairing, no password, no app, no Bluetooth connection request.

How Does NFC Work?
NFC uses a principle called electromagnetic induction, the same physics behind wireless phone charging.
Every NFC device contains a small loop antenna (a coil of wire). When the powered device (your phone, your card reader) brings its antenna close to a passive NFC tag (a card, sticker, or keychain), it generates an alternating electromagnetic field at 13.56 MHz. This field induces a tiny electrical current in the antenna of the passive tag. That current is enough to power the NFC chip, which reads its stored data and modulates the field to transmit that data back to the phone.
The entire transaction takes under 50 milliseconds. There is no battery in a passive NFC tag. Your phone provides the power.
The three operating modes of NFC
Read / Write mode
The most common mode for business applications. Your smartphone reads data from a passive NFC tag: an NFC business card, a review stand, a sticker on a product. The tag contains an NDEF (NFC Data Exchange Format) record, typically a URL, that opens automatically on the phone.
Card emulation mode
Your phone acts as a passive NFC card. This is how Apple Pay, Google Pay, and contactless transit cards (including the Nol card app) work.
Peer-to-peer mode
Two NFC-enabled devices exchange data directly. Used in some IoT applications and industrial settings.
What is stored on an NFC chip?
The most common NFC chips used in business products are the NTAG213, NTAG215, and NTAG216, holding 144 bytes, 504 bytes, and 888 bytes of user data respectively. For a URL, even the smallest chip holds more than enough for a full HTTPS link with UTM tracking parameters.
What goes into that URL is up to you: your LinkedIn profile, your website, a WhatsApp chat link, your Google review page, a digital menu, a vCard contact file, or a booking page.
